Mojo
ADOPTED! 12/24/2011
Estimated Birthday September 11, 2007
Mojo
is definitely a Yorkshire Terrier; he knows the world revolves around
him and he lives to be loved. He is very active. Running with the other
dogs brings him great joy, especially when he makes the big dogs lie
down and submit to his right to rule as lord and master of the realm.
Considering he only weighs five pounds his skills as a ruler are
impressive!
He
is in a foster home with medium and small dogs and two cats. Mojo has
been in the company of men, women and an occasional child, we feel he
will be most comfortable in a home with an opportunity to spend time
outdoors in a securely fenced yard and perhaps a dog friend or two. But,
then, he could be perfectly happy with a retired couple who will dote on
him and grant his every wish.
Mojo
has been neutered, vaccinated to prevent rabies and other common
diseases. He has been tested negative for heartworm and several
tick-borne diseases, is on monthly heartworm preventative, and is
microchipped.

Freckles
ADOPTED! 12/12/2011
Estimated Birthday
November 11, 2009
Poor
little darling was scared half to death when her rescue angel found her
running the streets of Albuquerque. After half an hour of coaxing she
finally let her finder pick her up. She spent the rest of the day at the
office making new friends. After two weeks of ads and posting her with
ABQ Animal Control we accepted her into our rescue to find her a new
home.
Freckles
is about three years old, weighs 16 pounds, and has a lovely, medium
length, liver and white coat spattered with freckles. She may be a mix
of a small Spaniel breed or longhair Chihuahua. She is a bit timid of
strangers but warms up after a short time. Her favorite things are
running in the yard with the other dogs, any kind of treat, and thinking
about chasing the cats. Freckles likes her crate, enjoys belly rubs and
cuddling with her favorite person.
Adoption
fee includes: Spay, core and rabies vaccinations, testing for Heartworm
and three tick borne diseases, and microchip. All she needs is
you!

Whiskers ADOPTED!
Estimated Birthday May 1,
2010
This
little cutie pie was picked up as a stray in Valencia County. We named
him whiskers because he has a smooth wire black and tan coat, with chin
whiskers. Whiskers is possibly a Chihuahua mixed with Yorkie or
Schnauzer.
His
foster mom says that he is housetrained, loves to play with toys, is
good with men and women, school aged children, large and small dogs, and
cats.
His
only flaw is a turn out of his right front leg. However, it does not
slow him down when playing or on his outings to the lake. At just
about a year old this little seven and a half pound sweetie has a
lifetime of love to give to a loving family.
Whiskers
is neutered, current on rabies and core vaccinations, is tested negative
for heartworm and three tick borne diseases, is on heartworm
preventative and is microchipped.

Isabella
ADOPTED! 11/03/2011
Birthday
March 29, 2008
Precious
Isabella is a three and a half pound Yorkie. She is a loving little dog
with the cutest scruffy face. She was surrendered by her owner because
they could not afford the care she requires for her health needs.
She
had trauma to her spine that was treated with steroids and cage rest.
Isabella was born with a common problem in small dog – a luxated
patella (slipping kneecap). She is scheduled for surgery in early July.
We are hoping that the leg repair will get her back on her feet and be
ready for a pain free life in a month or two.
We
are requesting donations to help with her knee surgery. If you would
like to donate please send your donation to:

Lucien
ADOPTED!
Birthday April 11, 2011
Lucien
is one of Lady Madonna’s puppies. Three of the pups have short legs -
the other three are longer legged like their mom, who we think may be a
Cocker Spaniel mix because of her thick, curly coat and partial tail.
However, she looks mostly Poodle when groomed. We can only guess what
other breeds are in Lucien’s pedigree because Dad was just
“visiting.”
Lucien
is one of the shorter legged pups. He weighed 16 pounds at four months,
has a dark charcoal colored coat and amber eyes. LaBella and he are best
buddies and love to wrestle and run in the yard. They are housetrained
to a doggie door and are crate trained. He is a bit sensitive, not as
much as a wild child with people as LaBella is, but loves attention from
men, women and plays well with other dogs in her foster home. He likes
to carry his favorite stuffed toy with him where ever he goes.
He
is neutered, has his puppy shot series, is rabies vaccinated, has kennel
cough vaccination, is on heartworm preventative and is microchipped.

Dusty II
ADOPTED! 10/26/2011
Birthday May 12, 2011
When
his wife died, the breeder realized he could not care for all of the
dogs in his home. He talked to his veterinarian about it, and Doc gave
him our contact information to see if we could help.
Dusty
is one of the four dogs we agreed to take into rescue. We are working
with him to try to get the last breeding pair spayed and neutered so he
is not overwhelmed again.
This
little boy is so precocious! He has no fear! He runs with the “big
dogs” (the other small dogs) in our foster home. He is fast as
lightening getting in or out of an open door or baby gate. Loves to
redecorate the laundry room he shares with MacKenzie and is more
interested in cardboard boxes than stuffed toys. He learned the doggie
door in a day, but only uses it to come in, not out so far.
He
is a purebred, registered AKC Chihuahua. He has lovely upright ears,
loving eyes, domed head and short muzzle. Dusty has a stocky body with
short legs and cutely turned tail. His white markings make a great
contrast to his wonderful brindle coat.
He
will be a small, but cobby bodied little fellow when he is grown.
We
are accepting applications to start the adoption process. Our
requirements are secure fencing and no children under school age. Dusty
will be neutered, vaccinated for rabies, have full series of puppy
shots, microchipped and on heartworm preventative. He will be available
for foster-to-adopt after his last puppy shot. The adoption will be
competed after he is neutered and microchipped.

Perlita Blanca
ADOPTED! 10/28/2011
Estimated Birthday June
10, 2010
“Love
is a four legged word” says the T-shirt. Perlita Blanca is the perfect
example. She was a bottle-baby given to a breeder and was coddled as an
orphan. Unfortunately, the breeder’s wife became ill and passed away.
Her husband was not able to continue to care for all of the dogs in his
home. His veterinarian gave him our number to see if we could take some
of his dogs. We took in Perlita Blanca, her two sons and Dusty.
“Lita”
is a lovely little girl that became a mother by accident far too young
in her life. She is a dotting mom to her two boys, but is now ready to
move on and find a family who will let her enjoy a loving home. She is
still over weight from the free feeding for the past few months while
the owner was attending to his wife’s needs. We think she will be
about eight pounds when she gets back on track.
Perlita
Blanca is spayed, has core and rabies vaccinations, has been tested for
heartworms and several tick borne diseases, is on heartworm preventative
and has been microchipped.

Simon
ADOPTED! 10/20/2011
Estimated
Birthday August 25, 2009
All
he wants to do is be with you and grant your wishes. If you want to go
for a walk he is ready and waiting. If you want to veg out on the couch
he is ready to snuggle. You need a friend for your dog or cat to stay
with while you’re at work - Simon is your man.
Housetrained,
walks on a leash, knows sit and working on stay, your wish is his
command! Good with men, women, other dogs and cats - what more can you
ask for in a companion.
Simon
is about two years old, weighs 18 pounds, is most likely a Schnauzer or
Schnauzer mix. He has been neutered, microchipped, is current on rabies
and core vaccinations, has been tested negative for heartworm and four
tick borne diseases and is on heartworm preventative. All he needs now
is a home that can appreciate his loving personality.

Lady
Madonna ADOPTED!
06/20/2011
Estimated Birthday March 18, 2009
Many
shelters in rural areas do not have space to hold dogs for more than a
few days. If owners do no reclaim them they are available for adoption
or rescue transfer. Some dogs have health issues that require that
rescue only can take them. Lady Madonna is one of them; she was
pregnant.
We
think she may be a Cocker Spaniel mix because of her thick, curly coat
and partial tail, but she looks like a poodle when she is shaved.
We can only guess what other breeds are in her pedigree.
She
weighs just under 20 pounds.
Lady
Madonna will be spayed, given core vaccinations, tested for heartworm
and several tick bourne diseases, and microchipped.

Makenzie
ADOPTED! 09/28/2011
Estimated Birthday: February 21, 2007
What
stunning colors on this lovely little girl! The white with amber patches
over her ears and sprinkles of large freckles on her body are a unique
color pattern. Add her luminous eyes and big
Chihuahua
ears, Makenzie is just lovely to behold.
Makenzie
has been in several homes and was released to us by an active family
that did not feel they were able to give her the quality of life she
deserves. We are looking for a family that can give her a quiet and
stable home where snuggles with a small dog are a priority. Makenzie is
a sensitive dog that needs a bit of sunshine in her life to blossom into
a sparkling gem for a very lucky someone.
She
is spayed, current on all vaccinations, tested negative for several tick
borne diseases and heartworm, on heartworm preventative and microchipped.

|
Lindsey
ADOPTED!
Estimated Birthday July 16, 2008
Lindsey
was found as a stray in Albuquerque. The shelter released her to rescue
because she was near the end of her pregnancy. We took her in on
Saturday, January 15th and planned to have her x-rayed to see how big
the puppies were and decide if she should have a cesarean to deliver
them if they were too big.
Sunday
morning she went into labor. The first puppy, Alysia, was slow in
delivery, but made it. The second puppy’s head was too big to deliver
without help. The vet had to tranquilize to assist in the delivery, but
it was too late and little Lilo didn’t survive. Alysia has since been
weaned so Lindsey is ready for adoption.
Housetrained,
a social butterfly and a sweet little snuggle pup, Lindsey is a perfect
little four pound lapdog. Because she is so small and delicate we are
looking for an adult/young adult home without large, rambunctious dogs.
She
is spayed, current on all vaccinations, tested negative for several tick
borne diseases and heartworm, on heartworm preventative and, is
microchipped.

Alysia
ADOPTED! 09/21/2011
Estimated
Birthday January 16, 2011
Lindsey,
a little 4 pound Chihuahua, was found as a stray in Albuquerque. The
shelter released her to rescue because she was near the end of her
pregnancy. We took her in on Saturday and planned to have her x-rayed on
Monday to see how big the puppies were and decide if she should have a
cesarean to deliver them if they were too big.
Sunday
morning, January 16th, she went into labor. The first puppy, Alysia, was
slow in delivery, but made it. The second puppy’s head was too big to
deliver without help. The vet had to tranquilize to assist in the
delivery, but it was too late and little Lilo didn’t make it.
We
won’t know until Alysia is older, what breed her daddy may be and it
will only be a guess. At twelve weeks old Alysia only weighed 1.6
pounds. She is very sweet and loves to play with the other foster dogs
and cuddle with people. It was only recently we found that she has very
limited vision. Perhaps that is why she was born with upright ears that
have grown so large to help compensate for her handicap.
Alysia
will be offered as "foster-to-adopt" until she is spayed,
vaccinated and microchipped. She is a little fighter or she would not
have survived . It will be interesting to she what her personality is as
she grows up. Best guess is she will be a bit of a pistol.
UPDATE:
She has grown into a very brave and adventurous girl and is the ultimate
little shadow to all her foster siblings. She weighed in at 1 lb-14
1/2oz. at 3 mos old and has the confidence of at least a 5 pounder! She
wrestles with her Mom, Lindsey and is also a very studious opponent for
10.5 lb. Jesse Brian. He may be bigger, but she has a voice and an
attitude and when she says no, it means NO! She is a ’hoppy’ little
girl and doesn’t know in the least that she is ’limited’ by her
eyesight, nor by her size. She will run and jump for your lap (missing
by quite a bit) but doesn’t give up...ever....just keeps it up until
you pick her up cause she deserves it after such a valiant attempt. She
is absolutely a little love bug and her favorite place to sleep is on
your chest with her face buried in your neck. Her nick-name is ’Little
Monkey’ because of her little wiggly body and legs when you play with
her, and when she is barking to alert us of ’danger’ in the
yard...well, let’s just say it’s about the most precious little
sound you will ever hear! She is using poddy pads more and more now that
her environment is very familiar and LOVES being outside with the other
dogs...you just have to watch her very close...she can still fit through
a little 1-1/2 inch opening!! The ONLY reason Foster Mom is letting her
go....she deserves SO much more attention to become her full self and
will fit best in a home with no young children and someone dedicated to
helping her become the best she can be!

Robbin
ADOPTED!
09/23/2011
Estimated Birthday February 19, 2011
We
waiting for adult teeth to come in to get a better guess of her age.
Isn’t
she just the cutest little thing?! We don’t know what mix breeds she
is, though most likely there is some poodle and perhaps Maltese or other
small long haired heritage in the blend, as well.
Robbin
is a super social little girl that gets along well with other dogs but
prefers people and treats. She is full of puppy energy and happy puppy
wiggles.
You
would never guess that she was nearly dead from dehydration when she was
taken to the Valencia County Shelter. The owner didn’t know what was
wrong with her so turned her over to be euthanized. The shelter asked if
we would take her and try to revive her. All it took was twenty four
hours of hydrating and hand feeding to light the spark that turned into
this little fireball.
Robbin
weighed just under four pounds in the beginning of June. We think she
will weigh under ten pounds when fully grown.
She
will be spayed, given puppy shot series, rabies vaccination,
microchipped and on heart worm preventative prior to adoption. However,
she can go to a foster-to-adopt home after her final puppy shot and
adoption will be completed after she is spayed and chipped.

Lucas
ADOPTED! 09/08/2011
Birthday April 11, 2011
Lucas
is one of Lady Madonna’s puppies. Three of the pups have short legs -
the other three are longer legged like their mom, who we think may be
a Cocker Spaniel mix because of her thick, curly coat and partial
tail. However, she looks mostly Poodle when groomed. We can only guess
what other breeds are in Lucien’s pedigree because Dad was just
“visiting.”
Lucas
is one of the shorter legged pups. He is the smallest of the six
puppies, but has a huge personality. He runs and plays with the other
dogs but is submissive so tends to get run over when they go on a zoom
doggie run in figure eights and through the bushes. Everyone
interests him: men, women and children. He pretends to ignore the cat.
If you are looking for a sweet little boy to cuddle and happy-up your
home and family, Lucas would be just about perfect.
He
will be neutered, has his puppy shot series, is rabies vaccinated, has
kennel cough vaccination, is on heartworm preventative and will be
microchipped before adoption.

Landon
ADOPTED! 09/03/2011
Birthday April 11, 2011
Landon
is one of Lady Madonna’s puppies. Three of the pups have short legs -
the other three are longer legged like their mom, who we think may be
a Cocker Spaniel mix because of her thick, curly coat and partial
tail. However, she looks mostly Poodle when groomed. We can only guess
what other breeds are in Lucien’s pedigree because Dad was just
“visiting.”
Landon
is one of the longer legged pups. He looks like a miniature yellow
Labrador Retriever and acts like one. At only 23 pounds he will do well
in a home with a small yard as long as he gets walks and a chance to run
and play with other dogs. He is very well socialized by his foster
family so is good with men, women, children and other dogs.
He
is neutered, has his puppy shot series, is rabies vaccinated, has kennel
cough vaccination, is on heartworm preventative and will be microchipped
before adoption.

Tenzin
ADOPTED! 09/25/2011
Estimated Birthday
February 11, 2010
This
little boy is such a grand little dog. He is great with the other dogs
and loves attention. We think he is a Tibetan Spaniel from his
appearance and the fact there are Tibetan Spaniel breeders in the area.
No way to now for sure, but he has most of the breeds
characteristics.
Tenzin
was found as a stray in Valencia County and held at the shelter for his
owners to reclaim him, but they didn’t find him before the stay hold
was up. He had some mats and quite a few ticks, but was otherwise in
good condition. We took him into our rescue so that we could provide him
the chance for a wonderful, forever home. This little guy is going to be
a fabulous companion for the lucky family that adopts him.
He
has been neutered, vaccinated to prevent rabies and other core diseases,
has been tested negative for heartworm and three tick borne diseases, is
on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Tenzin weighs just
under ten pounds is about 1 ½ years old.

|
Liebchen
ADOPTED! 08/20/2011
Estimated Birthday
4/16/2011
While
we were at the shelter doing photos for the local paper a woman brought
in this sweet little pup. She found her as a stray in her neighborhood
but couldn’t find an owner. Nor could she find anyone to take her, so
brought her to the shelter. After the 72 hour stray hold she was
available for adoption.
Her
scruffy little face stuck in our minds and hearts so we asked to take
her into our rescue. We think she is mostly Schnauzer and has a salt and
pepper, wire coat. Libby is super sweet, very social and should make a
terrific little friend for a family with school age children.
Liebchen
will be spayed, vaccinated for rabies and core puppy shots, microchipped,
tested for heartworm and several tick borne diseases and on heartworm
preventative before she is adopted. Since she is still a puppy, she will
be available for foster-to-adopt after her last puppy shot. Adoption
will be completed after she is spayed and microchipped.

Lillie
Marlene ADOPTED!
08/16/2011
Estimated Birthday July 18, 2010
Lillie
Marlene is a calm and submissive dog that is willing to do as asked
without a lot of nonsense. She is easy going and seems to find both men
and women to be good company.
She
was found as a stray in Albuquerque so we don’t know her background.
Her coat and body style suggest that she is most likely a Standard
Schnauzer mix. She weighs 20 pounds and is about one year old.
Lillie
will be spayed, tested for heartworms and several tick borne diseases,
vaccinated, microchipped and will be on heartworm preventative prior to
adoption.
|
|
ADOPTED! 07/23/2011
Pipsqueak
Estimated Birthday April 8, 2011
This
little tyke was at the City of Albuquerque for her stray hold period but
they didn’t want to adopter her to the general public because she had
ear infections and blistering around her muzzle. They prefer that a
rescue take dogs with health issues so they can hold them long enough to
treat them before they go to a new home.
Pipsqueaks
estimated age was three months at the time we took her into our rescue.
However, as of May 11 she still does not have any adult teeth so she may
be younger than was thought. She is a very active and playful pup that
enjoys chasing, tumbling and chewing with the other youngster in her
foster home.
“Pip”
weighed 3½ pounds on April 8 and 5½ pounds on May 11. We cannot yet
give an estimated weight when she is full grown (maybe around nine or
ten pounds?). She is possibly a Chihuahua mixed with Pomeranian or even
American Eskimo. She has a is very dense, short white coat with apricot
colored ears.
She
is a delightfully happy little dog with hefty leg bones so should be
able to hike, play ball and make a great all-around small indoor
companion for an active home.
Pipsqueak
is spayed, microchipped, tested negative for heartworm and several tick
borne diseases, is on monthly heartworm preventative, current on rabies
and puppy vaccinations. She is using a doggy door in her foster home and
knows “outside” as a command to use it.

ADOPTED!
07/21/2011
Rocky
Estimated Birthday July 7, 2005
What
a little angel! Rocky was found as a stray in Valencia County. He has
the softest, thick, golden fawn colored coat. He is a tiny guy, weighing
under five pounds, has a lovely domed head, big ears and huge brown eyes
- every tiny inch Chihuahua. Rocky loves everyone and loves to cuddle.
We would like to find an older family to adopt because he is so small.
We
have done all of his basic veterinary care, including: neuter, rabies
vaccination, core vaccinations, testing for heartworm and tick disease
and had him microchipped. We also did a dental that left him with a just
a few molars, that is why his tongue is usually out on one side.
If
you are looking for a little full time snuggle bug, Rocky would love to
curl up and spend his time listening to your life story.

ADOPTED!
07/27/2011
Eva
Estimated Birthday October 16, 2001
Over
the years we have taken in many little dogs that were very sick or
severely injured. Some we were not able to save. Eva is one of the most
amazing injured dogs that has not only survived but thrived against
extreme odds.
One
of our previous adopters was walking her dogs on a Saturday afternoon
in the South Valley area of Albuquerque. She saw this little girl
staggering along the ditch bank, barely able to walk. It appeared that
she had been attacked by a hawk; ripped from elbow to shoulder on her
right side and from shoulder to her withers on the left. She also had
multiple punctures from her ears to her mid-section and trauma to her
right eye.
Eva
is about ten years old, weighs just over five pounds, and has a lush
coat of fawn and white. She is a bit worried about meeting new people at
first, but loves to snuggle with her foster moms. She is ecstatic
- absolutely ecstatic - about going on walks, jumping up and down with
great excitement over the prospect. Once out and about she has the
prance of a youngster. She has been seen chewing and playing with
stuffed dog toys as well. She currently lives with cats and other
dogs —she would rather be an only dog but is accepting (even though
begrudgingly) of the others’ presence.
She
is housetrained, using a dog door to go outside. She is a great
eater (and that is an understatement). She also has a little smile
that just permanently invades her aura. She is just an absolutely
adorable little dog.
She
has had a dental, tested negative for several tick borne diseases and
heartworms, has basic core vaccinations and rabies and is microchipped.
We believe she was spayed early in her life. Eva is very special little
girl and we would like to find a very special family to give her a warm
and save home for the rest of her life.

ADOPTED! 07/09/2011
Tristan
Estimated Birthday June 7, 2009
Tristan
gets along great with his fellow foster dogs, but all he really wants is
to be with people, though treats are a close second. We think he is
about two years old and he weighs nine pounds; just a little package of
wiggle! He is possibly a Yorkshire Terrier or Silky Terrier cross. We
had to cut out a lot of tangles and mats so his coat will probably be
longer when it grows back. It will require weekly brushing and
professional grooming every month or two.
He
was left at the Valencia County Animal Shelter gate. Did his owners
leave him there because they couldn’t keep him anymore or did someone
find him and drop him off because they were not able to hold on to him
until his owners were found? Checking the lost and found records
didn’t turn up a lost report. Whatever his history we have promised
him a loving new home.
Tristan
is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated to prevent rabies, parvo, and
distemper, has been tested negative for heartworm and is on heartworm
preventative, and tested negative for three tick borne diseases. He is
sharing the doggie play area with several other small dogs and is using
the doggie door there. All he needs now is someone to love him and give
him LOTS of attention.

ADOPTED!
07/05/2011
Angelo
Estimated Birthday June 7, 2008
What
a little love bug! His thick white coat has light tan patches on his
head and small areas on his body. When he is excited he does a spritely
prancing step with a flourish of his tail. Angelo always has a bright
smile on his face and is eager to please.
He
appears to be a Pomeranian, so will require regular brushing and
professional grooming to keep his coat free from tangles and mats.
Hopefully a change to a quality dog food and some attention to his eyes
will help reduce the tear staining.
Currently
sharing his doggie yard with four other small dogs, we believe he will
do fine with other dogs that are good with small, active dogs. He is
kissy with women and men, but we think very small children might be more
than he will be comfortable with full time.
Angelo
is using a doggie door, has been neutered, tested negative for heartworm
and is on heartworm preventative, has been tested negative for three
tick bourne diseases, and is microchipped.

ADOPTED!
07/10/2011
Taffy
II
Estimated Birthday November 7, 2010
Another
incredible Valencia County dog found as a stray. Without any history we
can only guess her age and mix of breeds. A possible mix of breeds is
either Pomeranian and Pekingese mixed or either mixed with Chihuahua.
Doesn’t really matter, she is obviously a “mutt”, but what a
delightful little waif!
All
little Taffy wants is to be with a person. She needs to be groomed often
because of her long, thick coat. She needs a lot of activity because she
is still just a baby. She needs a family that wants a dog as a full time
indoor companion. She is a sweetheart that will fill the heart of the
lucky someone who adopts her.
Taffy
will be spayed, microchipped, tested for heartworm and several tick
borne diseases, current on rabies and core vaccinations and on monthly
heartworm preventative before she is adopted. She is currently using a
piddle pad but will be trained to use a doggy door soon.

ADOPTED!
05/30/2011
Tatiana
Estimated Birthday January 15,
2011
So
many of the dogs we take into our rescue are injured, sick or have age
related health problems so it is exciting to have a healthy pup
available for adoption! Tatiana weighed eight and a half pounds at about
three months of age. She is very affectionate and loves to be cuddled.
We
think she may be part Border Terrier or Cairn Terrier mix because of her
black and tan, wire coat. She has heavy boned legs so is not a fragile
little girl. She should do well as an indoor dog with a family that
enjoys the outdoors for gardening, walking and hiking.
Tatiana
will be available as a foster-to-adopt after she is current on all of
her puppy shots, rabies vaccination, and is microchipped. She is on
monthly heartworm preventative. Her adoption will be completed after she
is spayed at six months of age.

ADOPTED!
06-05-2011
Desert
Flower
Estimated Birthday May 17, 2010
Just
as sweet as a little Chihuahua mix girl can be, Desert Flower is a
snuggle baby. She loves to play with her best buddy, Nocchi. Flower’s
foster family is happy to report that she is housetrained, in fact she
wakes her foster mom with kisses, asking to go out.
This
pretty little girl was found as a stray in Belen. Not an unusual
occurrence for Chihuahua and other small dogs to be found wandering the
streets. However, this one is unusual because she was found as a three
month old puppy with pierced ears! Hard to imagine that anyone would do
such a thing to an innocent little dog. The people who found her
immediately removed the earrings and starting treating the infection
caused by the lack of proper care. It appears that the left ear may be
permanently dropped from the weight of the earring that was placed too
high for her delicate ear to support it.
A
typical young pup, Flower is still chewing on anything and everything
and full of playful chasing of toys, feet and other dogs, but she loves
to cuddle when she is worn out.
Desert
Flower will be spayed, vaccinated to prevent distemper, parvo, kennel
cough and rabies, and microchipped. She currently weighs five pounds at
four months old.

Ignacio
Estimated Birthday January
1, 2011
Ignaciao
weighted 2.6 pounds on February 26th. He was about eight weeks old then.
He and his brother, Jesse Brian, were given to a young couple by
friends. Unfortunately, they couldn’t keep them because the landlord
does not allow pets in their apartment.
Both
of the brothers are very social with everyone! They are in a foster home
with other Chihuahuas and a couple of Australian Shepherds. They
are using piddle pads now, but will be housetrained to use a doggy door.
Both
will be available to a “foster-to-adopt” home in a few weeks. They
will be neutered, microchipped and current on vaccinations, dewormed and
on heartworm preventative prior to final adoption.

Jesse Brian
Estimated
Birthday January 1, 2011
Jesse
Brian weighted 3.5 pounds on February 26th. He was about eight weeks old
then. He gained two pounds by April 8th so he will be a around ten or
eleven pounds when he grows up. He and his brother, Ignacio, were given
to a young couple by friends, but their landlord would not let them keep
them in their apartment. The brothers are very social with everyone!
They are in a foster home with other Chihuahuas and a couple of
Australian Shepherds. They are using piddle pads and are trained
to use a doggy door. Jesse Brian is available to a
“foster-to-adopt” home.. He will be neutered, microchipped and
current on vaccinations, dewormed and on heartworm preventative
prior to final adoption.
He
is the epitome of puppy and all that’s good in the world. He is a very
smart young man and learned to sit for treats in about 2 minutes of
practice. Of course, his whole body is reeling with excitement, so
it’s a wiggly sit, but a sit. He is using the doggy door like a pro,
but still goes to the potty pad when he is in a big hurry or its just
too windy to go outside. He is staying dry all night and goes to find
his bed about 9:30pm every night like clockwork and loves routine!! He
is the little brother of the bunch, playing and wrestling with all his
playmates - from 2 lb Alysia (Also a foster) - up to the foster Mom’s
big boys, 80lb Aussies. He loves EVERYONE and we are delighted that as
excited as he gets....there is NO excited pottying! Yeah! He is not a
face kisser...although we are trying like heck to change that, but loves
to cuddle and digs in his covers for 10 minutes until they are just
right! He needs a home with another doggy playmate or a family willing
to put in play time with him. Someone is going to be very, very, very
lucky to have this sweet boy in their life!

Russell
II
Estimated
Birthday April 4/11/2003
With
his black tuxedo coat, soulful eyes, gentle manners and sweet
disposition we should have renamed him Rhett Butler or Clark Gable as he
is the epitome of a Southern, gentleman.
Russell
is housetrained to a doggy door, sleeps in bed with his foster mom and
two other Chihuahuas, is friendly with men, women, children, other dogs
and cats. He will be a great companion for any stable home who
appreciates a healthy, mature little dog.
His
previous owner adopted him from the Espanola shelter when he was a pup.
Since then she became a very young, single mom with a child that has
health issues. Russell was relegated to the back yard and began to
escape by climbing the gate to look for companionship. After finding him
running in the street and returning him twice; his current foster home
asked if she would like to release him to rescue. She said yes.

05/29/2011
Tucker
Estimated Birthday April 29, 2008
Tucker
is one of the most incredible little dogs we have had the privilege to
bring into our rescue. How the heck his family didn’t find him before
his stray hold was up is almost shocking! We would have turned the world
upside down to get him back if he had been lost from our foster home. He
is absolutely gorgeous, is incredibly intelligent and loves to please.
He
looks like a miniature Austrian shepherd - right down to his docked
tail, but he only weighs 11 pounds! He is most likely a mix of Aussie
with a toy breed. Tucker will need weekly brushing to keep the tangles
out of his long, silky coat. He loves to go for walks and would probably
enjoy having a large yard with another small or medium size dog to keep
him company.
Tucker
is neutered, microchipped, tested negative for heartworm and several
tick borne diseases, is on monthly heartworm preventative and has had a
dental.

Squirt
Estimated Birthday November 25, 2010
Squirt
was picked up as an injured stray in Valencia County. We took her into
rescue so she could receive veterinary care to repair her broken front
leg. She has multiple fractures to the two bones below her elbow and the
elbow joint is also broken. She has pins in the elbow joint to hold them
in place and the lower part is splinted.
Most
likely a Corgi, Squirt is about three months old and weighs about 15
pounds. She is very social with men and women. However, it is highly
likely the foster family will not be able to part with her after they
care for her through her rehab.

ADOPTED! 04/24/2011
Bobby
Estimated Birthday March 8, 2006
Bobby
is a little prince. He stands on his hind legs, puts his little front
paws together and begs for attention. And, he gets along with men,
women, and other dogs. We don’t know how he is with cats and children,
but we guess that he will do well with both with proper introduction.
He has learned the doggy door, doesn’t bark a lot and is rather
sedate. In other words, pretty much a perfect little dog.
His
ideal home will be with a family that enjoys the company of small dogs,
can afford to continue to keep up with his grooming needs, has school
aged children and, perhaps, an older family member that will spoil him
during the day.
He
was found as a stray in Valencia County, but his owners did not reclaim
him. His coat was long, matted and getting into his eyes. Bobby will
need to be groomed every six to eight weeks to prevent matting and
irritation to his eyes. He had a yeast infection in his ears so they
will need to be cleaned by the groomer, as well.
We
think he is about five years old and weighs six and a half pounds. He
has been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated to prevent distemper, parvo,
adenovirus, parainfluenza, kennel cough, had a dental and has been
tested negative for three tick borne diseases, heartworm and is on
heartworm preventative.

ADOPTED! 04/24/2011
Boone
Estimated Birthday February 11, 2009
Time
was running out for this handsome little guy at the Valencia County
Shelter. He was picked up as a stray and his owners didn’t come to
reclaim him. We feel in love and decided to bring him into rescue so we
can find him a great home where he will be as cherished as he deserves.
We
believe he is a Pomeranian or Longhair Chihuahua mix. Boone weighs ten
and a half pounds, uses a doggy door and gets along well with his two
kennel buddies. He enjoys being brushed and is delighted to chase a
tossed ball or stuffed toy. He is good with men and women, don’t know
about cats or young children yet.
He
is neutered, tested negative for several tick borne diseases and
heartworm, is on heartworm preventative, current on basic vaccinations,
including rabies shots, and is microchipped.

ADOPTED!
03/12/201
Rusty
1
Estimated Birthday December 9, 2008
Rusty
was released to rescue because his owner was not able to care for him.
They wanted him to find a home that can give him the special care a
hairless dog needs: warm cloths and blankets when the weather is cold
and sun screen and lotion for his tender skin when it is hot and sunny.
If you have never had a hairless dog you cannot imagine how baby soft
their skin is to touch - like a babies behind!
He
is a Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced Show- low-its-queen-tli) abbreviated to
Xolo (Show-low). The Xolo comes in three sizes, Toy, Miniature,
Standard, and two varieties: The coated and the hairless. The Hairless
being the more sought after and popular variety. Rusty is a Toy,
weighing in at a 10 pounds, has soft blue skin coloring on his
body and rusty colored hair on his head and tail. His foster mom
says that he is social, house trained and an absolute treasure in every
way.
We
will take several applications and interview for the most appropriate
home, given his special care needs as a hairless dog. Rusty is neutered,
current on vaccinations, tested negative for heartworm and several tick
borne diseases, had a dental and is microchipped.

ADOPTED!
03/18/2011
Edgar
Estimated Birthday November 11, 2004
We
so often ask ourselves how the great dogs and cats come into the shelter
as strays and the owners do not come to reclaim them. Do they not know
how or where to look for them? Do they assume they were stolen or will
return on their own? Edgar is an example of “how can this be?”
Perhaps
it is because he is hard of hearing, or perhaps because he is middle
aged. Neither of those issues have made a difference in his sweet
temperament, though. We just don’t know why he was not reclaimed from
the Valencia County shelter.
Edgar
uses a doggy door, loves to play chase the ball (but doesn’t bring it
back), and is great with the other foster dogs.
He
does like a little wet food on top of his dry kibble and thinks a little
bite of cooked chicken or steak is grand. He will be a wonderful
companion for a home with people in his “golden years” age group. If
you have a warm lap and an open heart, Edgar would love to fill both.
Current
on all vaccinations, tested negative for several tick borne diseases and
heartworm, neutered, microchipped and recently had a dental, Edgar is
ready for a loving home.

ADOPTED! 02/20/2011
Samantha
Estimated Birthday August 27, 2008
For
a couple of days there were several reports of a little dog limping in
Daniel Fernandez Park next to the Valencia County Animal Shelter. As I
was driving into the shelter to do photos for the weekly News-Bulletin
Pet Page I saw the Animal control officers trying to get the dog out
from under a car parked in the dry field next door. They had to use a
catch pole to retrieve the poor, frightened little girl.
It
was easy to see that her limp was from a broken leg and she had missed a
lot of meals. I took a quick photo of her in the arms of David, one of
the ACOs that were able to bring her into the shelter. I sent the photo
out to our friends in rescue in hope that someone would offer to help
her. Thanks to our foster home - Barb and Jaye - we were able to spring
her before she was listed for euthanasia.
Within
days she had surgery to bring the broken bones into alignment and her
prognosis is good for a full recovery. It will be at least a couple of
months before she is back on all four feet and ready for adoption. In
the meantime she will be spayed, updated on vaccinations, tested for
heartworm, put on heartworm preventative and microchipped.

Diamond
Lil
Estimated Birthday
October 14, 2009Just
over a year old, this pretty little girl wandered from her home into a
neighbors yard and was attacked by a bigger dog. The owners could not
afford to take her to a veterinarian so surrendered her to the Valencia
County animal shelter. We couldn’t let her be euthanized without
giving her a chance so we took her into our rescue and then to our
veterinarian to see if she could recover. Her injuries caused her
to loose control of her hind quarters, but with “tincture of time”
and medication she has regained her ability to not only walk, but
run and play.
“Lilly”
is a sweet little girl, weighing about seven pounds and has the cutest
under bite. Her eyes are a light hazel color and her coat is pale fawn
with a touch of apricot on her ears. She is very social with people,
though still is doing some puppy like submissive peeing when she is
nervous. A calm home will give her a chance to become the perfect little
dog she was born to be.
Diamond
Lil has been spayed, vaccinated to prevent parvo, distemper, rabies and
microchipped. She has been tested negative for several tick borne
diseases, heartworm and is on heartworm preventative.

02/23/2011
Paco
Viejo
Estimated Birthday January 14, 2002
A
collar, but no tag; neutered, but no microchip. Found running at large
with a Pug and a Dachshund mix in Albuquerque, this little seven pound
Chihuahua boy was picked with his posse. The finder posted flyers, ran a
found ad in the Journal and contacted the shelter to report them. After
several weeks of looking she asked rescue to help place them as she has
a newborn and a preteen child and has moved back into her parent's home.
He
only weighed 6 and a half pounds when he was found, but has gained a
pound with his finder's good care. He desperately needs a dental and
will most likely to lose most of his teeth. We will bring him up-to-date
on his vaccinations, heartworm and tick borne disease testing, and
microchip him, as well.
Poco
Viejo is a sweet old gentleman that needs a quiet and loving home in his
golden years. He appears to be housebroken, is good with women and
children, though a bit tentative with men.

ADOPTED!
02/05/2011
Sophia
Estimated Birthday November 30, 2006
This
precious little four pound bundle of joy is super friendly. She would be
the perfect little gal to be in a kissing booth at a fund-raiser; she
loves everyone. Sophia is housetrained, current on vaccinations, spayed,
tested negative for several tick borne diseases and heartworm, is on
heartworm preventative, and is microchipped.
Picked
up as a stray with no collar or ID, this little sweetie pie was sitting
in the shelter waiting for an owner who never came to reclaim her.
Perhaps because she is not quite perfect. Whether injured as a pup or
born with a deformity to her left front leg, she stands with her foot
turned to the side. It doesn’t bother her and our veterinarian doesn’t
feel that corrective surgery is needed. And, as tiny as she is, it is
likely that she will be carried everywhere anyway.

ADOPTED!
02/15/2011
Princess
Priscilla
Birthday July 9, 2008
Princess
Priscilla is a purebred Chihuahua that was purchased by a woman who
loved her tremendously. Unfortunately, her owner’s heath issues have
made it difficult to care for her properly so she asked if we would take
her precious little Prissy to find her a new home.
This
darling little girl weighs about four and a half pounds, has the cutest
little Chihuahua face, tiny muzzle, huge eyes and lovely big ears. She
uses a piddle pad when confined and learned the doggy door in one day.
Prissy gets along very well with the other little ones in her foster
home and is good with men and women when she has a few days to get used
to them.
She
is current on vaccinations, tested for heartworm and on heartworm
preventative, and is microchipped.

|
ADOPTED! 02/26/2011
Trixie
Estimated Birthday 9-17-2009
She
loves attention, and lots of it! Found as a stray in Valencia County we
don’t know Trixie’s history. However, in her foster family she
divides her time equally between her foster mom and foster dad. She is a
very active little dog - typical of the Terrier group. We think she is
likely a Skye Terrier or Cairn Terrier mix.
She
is about one year old and weighs fifteen pounds.
Trixie
needs a young family that can keep her busy during the day so she can
expend enough energy to settle into a quiet evening, otherwise she
spends her time trying to keep the other dogs engaged or is busy chewing
toys and other objects. A secure dog yard might be a deterrent to
chewing inappropriate household items. A family that is familiar
with the temperament of Jack Russell Terriers and such is preferred. We
do not know her ability to share a home with cats, but she will do well
with school aged children and help recycle their toys.
Trixie
is spayed, vaccinated to prevent parvo virus, distemper kennel cough and
rabies. She is tested negative for heartworm and on preventative and is
tested negative for several tick borne diseases, and is
microchipped.

ADOPTED! 02/26/2011
Drifter
Estimated Birthday February 3, 2007
Our
little Drifter was released to the Valencia County animal shelter
because his family lost their home and had to live in a camper trailer.
They also gave up a Pit Bull and a shaggy puppy they had found as a
stray.
Born
with a deformed front leg, Drifter hops in front and walks with his rear
legs. He is able to jump up on furniture and behaves like a four legged
Chihuahua in every other way. He loves to sleep under the covers in bed
with his foster mom, snuggle on the couch and beg for treats.
He
gets a long with the foster families other large and small dogs, cats,
women, and men, given a little time to warm up. Drifter weighs about
five and a half pounds, has big brown eyes and a need for a home
that has a heart big enough for a little dog with special needs.

ADOPTED! 01/20/2011
Holly
Estimated Birthday January 1, 2010
Someone
found this sweet little gal as a stray in Valencia County and kept her
for two weeks, but decided she didn’t want to keep her so gave her to
a friend. The friend brought her to the shelter because she didn’t
want to keep her either.
The
reason might be that she is a very active young terrier. She is gets
along well with other small dogs and big dogs too. Curious about cats
and learning how to keep her distance. She is housebroken, good with
women, but we don’t know about she will be with men.
We
think she is about a year old, weighs 12 pounds and is possibly an
Australian Terrier mix. She has been spayed, microchipped,
vaccinated to prevent rabies, distemper, parvo virus, and kennel cough.
She has also been tested negative for several tick borne diseases and
heartworm and is on monthly heartworm preventative.
Holly
enjoys the outdoors a lot, but thinks a warm snuggle is even better.
This little girl is just too cute!

ADOPTED!
01/20/2011
Brandon
Estimated Birthday December 7, 2008
Brandon
was found as a stray in Valencia County and taken to the shelter. As
cute as he is we thought his owner would reclaim him or someone would
adopt him right away. But that didn’t happen. He was there long enough
to go to the adoption kennels but he started coughing and they needed to
get him into rescue as soon a possible so his “cold” would not be
spread to the other dogs. We said we would take him and give him a
chance for a new, loving home.
There
are a dozen small dog breeds that could be in his mix. Maybe Wirecoat
Dachshund, Lhasa Apso, Cairn Terrier, or even Dandy Dinmont Terrier. We
are guessing Norfolk and a mix with any or all of the above. He weighs
just 12 pounds and has a red sable, wire coat.
He
has already learned to use the dog door from his kennel to the dog yard.
He gets along very well with the two other dogs that share the kennel.
Brandon is very submissive and gives tentative little kisses to his
foster mom. He is not sure about men but takes treats from his foster
dad. We think he should be placed in an adult home with older
children as he may not enjoy the activity of young- preschool aged kids.
A
little time in a caring home will bring out the diamond within this
little scruff. Neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm and
tick testing, microchip and dental have been done.

Pebbles
Estimated Birthday September 22, 2009
Just
about perfect, little Pebbles is a real gem. She was adopted as a puppy
by an elderly woman whose health required her to give up this little
darling.
Pebbles
weighs under six pounds, is housetrained, current on all
vaccinations, is microchipped, and on heartworm preventative; all
this little sweetheart needs is a home that is suitable for a tiny dog.
Pebbles is good with women, men, and other small dogs. An adult home
with school age or older children would be her preference.

ADOPTED! 12/04/2010
Jock
Estimated
Birthday August 28, 2006
Enthusiastic
and very happy, Jock is a four year old, fourteen pound Silky Terrier
mix. He gets along with all the other dogs in his foster home and
ignores the cats.
If
you're looking for the perfect agility prospect, Jock is your dog. He's
energetic, loves to run and play and interact with people.
Jock
was picked up as a stray so we do not know his history. Secure fencing,
work in obedience training and leash walking should make him a great -
permanent family member.
He
has a beautiful blue and tan coat that will need to be groomed regularly
and trimmed every couple of months to keep him looking as handsome as he
is in these pictures.
Jock
is neutered, tested negative for heartworm and several tick borne
diseases, on monthly heartworm preventative, vaccinated to prevent
rabies, distemper, parvo virus, and is microchipped.

11/23/2010
Tiger
Estimated
Birthday April 11, 2010
Tiger
is the biggest of Elin’s puppies. Elin is a Chocolate and white
Chihuahua mix. We think his dad was a miniature Dachshund mix. Tiger
looks like he is predominately Dachshund.
A
happy little boy; super calm and submissive with people. He loves to
play fetch with his rubber ball or fluffy stuffed ring, but what Tiger
wants most is someone to hug and pet him.
He
is using a doggie door, but will need his owner to show him the ropes in
a new home as he is still a puppy. A training DVD will be provided to
help a new owner learn how to teach him to be a great little companion.
Tiger
is neutered, vaccinated to prevent rabies, parvo virus, distemper, and
kennel cough. He is on monthly heartworm preventative and is
microchipped.

11/20/2010
Poppy
II
Birthday October 31, 2008
Poppy
was born on Halloween two years ago. Her mommy is a black and white
Chihuahua cross and her daddy is an apricot Poodle. She has been raised
in a loving home so is very social and full of sweetness and light. She
has a fuzzy, curly Poodle coat that must be brushed or trimmed to keep
if from tangling. She was a dark chocolate brown as a puppy but has
turned into a café latte as a young adult. She weighs about twelve
pounds underneath all of that fluff.
Her
foster mom says: “Poppy is completely potty trained - uses the doggy
door and was crate trained prior. She is very dog social and after about
the first 20 min of introduction she is their new best friend and has an
abundance of energy and playfulness with the other dogs in the home. She
is absolutely one of the most loving and affectionate dogs I have had in
my home. She will jump next to you and push her face into your chest and
move it slowly up to your neck and she crawls into your lap - trying to
get as close as possible! She loves toys and chasing balls and jumps
with excitement all the way to your chin when you get home, but
strangely can’t jump over the baby gate to get into the ’off’
limits areas. She honestly does not have ONE bad habit and is just the
most perfect little family member! She loves to go bye-bye and loves the
leash, but needs some training on keeping in a forward direction. (She
is just too excited). With all her excitement and energy, she is very
obedient and will sit and lay down on command and is easily calmed down
with positive reinforcement. Oh yeah, when you talk to her, she leans
her head sideways saying ”really?”
Great
with other dogs, cats and school aged kids, Poppy is just about perfect
for a family looking for a small indoor companion to share their loving
home.
Poppy
is spayed, current on vaccinations to prevent parvo virus, distemper,
kennel cough, and rabies. She has been on heartworm preventative since
she was a puppy and is microchipped. She comes with her toys and a
custom made beaded collar to your order.

Wade
Estimated Birthday
September 11, 2008
This
little fellow was found as a stray in Valencia County. His hold time was
up, his owner didn’t come pick him up and no one had put an adoption
hold on him. When he broke with kennel cough his time was short at the
shelter. We decided a little cold wasn’t reason enough for him not to
find a home.
He
is in a foster home with sever other small dogs and has been begging for
attention from his foster mom. We don’t know how he feels about men,
children or cats, so those introductions will be made before he is
placed in a new home. He will need weekly brushing and professional
grooming about every six to eight weeks to prevent tangles in his long
coat. We think he is a possibly a Lhasa Apso mix, or perhaps a Poodle
and some breed of Terrier cross. In any case, he is just as cute as
Benji and just as sweet. He weighs twelve pounds, but should put on a
little more weight to fill out his little frame.
Wade
is neutered, current on vaccinations to prevent parvo virus, distemper,
kennel cough and rabies. He is on heartworm preventative and is
microchipped.

ADOPTED! 11/27/2010
Garrett
Estimated Birthday April 9, 2010
She
was just walking down the ditch bank with her dogs, minding her own
business, when she heard barking in the bushes beside the path. It took
just a minute to find the little dog hiding under a torn tarp that had
blown and caught on the branches of the weeds and trees there. Well, she
couldn’t just leave him so Teese called her friends on her cell phone.
Another one of the hundreds of lost and abandoned little waifs in
Valencia County had crossed the path, or really stopped the tracks, of
an animal rescuer.
Little
Garrett didn’t have a collar and tags or a microchip; ads and
reporting to the shelter didn’t turn up his owner. He is vaccinated,
microchipped, neutered, on heartworm preventative and not missing a few
ticks. And, now, is looking for his forever home. You know, the kind.
The kind of home that will keep him safe and warm for the next fifteen
or so years. You know one?

Hummingbird
Estimated Birthday April 11, 2010
She
was just one and a half pounds at six weeks old; our little “Birdie”
is worth her weight in gold. She is super sweet , yet full of it! Her
biggest brother weighed four pounds at six weeks, so we think there may
have been more than one daddy producing this litter of four. Tiger,
Bogie and Tee are bigger and have longer bodies and longer muzzles. We
think their daddy is part Dachshund. Little Birdie takes after her
mommy, Elin, a chocolate colored Chihuahua. It will be interesting to
see how they change in the next couple of months.

ADOPTED!
10/21/2010
Tee
Estimated Birthday April 11, 2010
She
is always into something! Tee is the middle of the litter in size and in
the middle of everything when they go out to play. Tee is full of
curiosity but she also loves to be held and cuddled. She looks a lot
like her brothers; Tiger and Bogie, and probably has some Dachshund from
her daddy’s side of the family. Her mom is Elin, a chocolate colored
Chihuahua. Little Tee is a delightful little dog that should be a great
companion for a family with school aged children.

Jamie
Estimated Birthday August 26, 2008
If
you know and love the temperament of a Cairn Terrier you will
immediately fall in love with this sweet little girl. She is about two
years old, weighs eleven pounds and has a red brindle coat.
Packed
full of bouncing off the walls delight, but also enjoys attention from
her foster mom. Jamie is in a home with a larger, dominant dog and is
submissive with her.
She
is social so we believe she would be fine in a home with school aged
children or an adult family. Jamie would probably not be a wise choice
for an older home unless you have another dog to entertain her as she is
very active.
Jamie
is spayed, tested negative for heartworm and several tick borne
diseases, is on monthly heartworm preventative, is vaccinated to prevent
rabies, parvo virus, distemper, kennel cough and is microchipped.

ADOPTED! 10/21/2010
Russie
Estimated Birthday March 11, 2008
This
beautiful Australian Shepherd just showed up in a Bosque Farms horse
paddock one afternoon, obviously lost and looking for home. After three
weeks of posting flyers throughout the Village, emailing dozens of homes
in the area, notifying the animal shelter, running lost ads in the
paper, it seems her owners do not want to be found.
Someone
spent time teaching her to heel on a leash and sits when you stop. She
comes when called and has been great in the house. She gets along well
with the other dogs in the foster home. Though she is only about two or
three years old, she has a sweet and steady disposition.
Russie
is now vaccinated to prevent rabies, parvovirus, distemper and kennel
cough, she has been tested negative for heartworm and tick borne
diseases, on heartworm preventative, had a dental and is microchipped.
Our veterinarian thinks she has been spayed.
If
you are looking for a great ranch dog come meet Russie.

Bogie
Estimated
Birthday April 11, 2010
This
darling little guy is one of Elin’s four puppies. Elin is a Chocolate
and white Chihuahua mix. We think his dad was a Dachshund mix. His big
brother, Tiger, looks like he is predominately Dachshund. But his little
sister, Birdie, looks mostly like a Chihuahua. Bogie is in between -
just the right size!
Bogie
is a small but sturdy little dog. He is as sweet a little boy as can be.
Bogie and his brother Tiger wake up full of play; they wrestle, dig in
the dirt, and then crash. He needs to find a family that is active to
help bring out his playful and energetic side. On-the-other hand, he
would love to have a grade school child to snuggle with at night.

Tesoro
Valiente
Estimated
Birthday July 4, 2008
Tesorro
Valiente - “Zorro” - is just about perfect. This little guy is a
dream come true for someone who is looking for a tiny,
take-with-you-everywhere Chihuahua. He has the greatest outgoing personality - good with men, women, and
other Chihuahuas. He uses piddle pads in the house and is already learning to come in
the doggy door. He barely makes a peep and loves to be held. He plays
well with the other dogs but is happy to toss a piece of kibble to keep
himself amused. He is even good about getting his toenails trimmed!
Only
two and a half pounds when we took him out of the shelter, he should
weigh about four pounds when he fills out. We are accepting applications
through August to find the perfect home for this little treasure. We are
looking for a very special home for this very special little dog.
He
is current on rabies vaccinations, tested for heartworm and on
preventative, current on basic core vaccinations and is neutered and
microchipped.

ADOPTED! 08/15/2010
Hobo
Estimated Birthday January 15, 2009
It
only took one day for Hobo to learn to use the doggie door in the kennel
to the dog yard. He immediately got along with the two other dogs in his
play area. He is a bright and happy fellow that will fit into a new
family quickly.
Hobo
was picked up as a stray by a family vacationing in another part of the
state and brought to the
Valencia
County
shelter by the finder. It is possible that he was abandoned by his
owner, but we gave them the benefit of the doubt and made contacts with
the shelters, radio station and a local tourist resort to let them know
he was found. After over a month we decided it was time to find him a
great new home.
If
you are looking for a small Dachshund as a companion, come meet Hobo. He
is neutered, microchipped, current on all vaccinations and on heartworm
preventative. Oh, and he loves people!

Captain
ADOPTED!
UPDATE JUNE 15, 2010:
The Captain’s adoption was finalized on Saturday, June 12th. He is now
living with Ben and Jill and their other rescue Chihuahuas. Ben makes
artificial limbs for people with disabilities like The Captain’s. We
are happy to hear that Ben plans to take The Captain to work and
introduce him to some of his young patients.
Captain’s fan
club has made it possible to buy his wheels for long walks and a
prostheses for his left leg for indoor use. There are funds left over
that will be used to fix the two broken legs on another little fellow
called Baxter. Thank you to everyone who helped this special little
fellow.
Captain
was a rescue transfer to Enchantment Chihuahua Rescue from an
overcrowded shelter in southern New Mexico. We took several dogs at high
risk for euthanasia that day. Most only need basic medical care and a
little more time in a foster home and they will be ready for new
families. Captain needs more than just a little time.
Born
with deformed front legs; the right is a tiny stub clamped close to his
body, the left is a bit longer and has a partial paw with pads. Since he
was born with his disability, he has learned how to get around pretty
well. He can jump up on the couch, balances on his haunches and
sometimes walks on his hind legs. Captain can scoot around quickly for
short sprints; however, long walks are out of the question. Since he is
a young dog we would like to give him the opportunity to enjoy the great
outdoors.
There
are several companies that make apparatus with wheels for dogs with
similar birth defects and injuries. Since he is an adult he is a
candidate for custom wheels that can expand his horizon. The cost will
be about $600.

Skippy
Lou
Birthday approx June 8, 2000.
Perfect
in every way, except . . . Little Skippy Lou was originally found as a
stray and was adopted from the City of Albuquerque shelter, but
returned. She had a seizure and the adoptive family decided not to keep
her.
We
have had several dogs over the years that have seizures and do very well
on medication. In Skippy Lou’s case that’s one-half of a small
inexpensive pill easily slipped into her food twice a day. She has years
of love and companionship to offer someone who recognizes that close to
perfect is good enough for them.
You
need to meet this precious little charmer. She is about eight years old,
about six pounds and two or three times beyond cute. She loves to go for
walks and when it is time to eat she doesn’t bark but is pretty vocal
about letting you know she is ready.

Angie
Birthday
October 20, 2006
This
young adult 10 pound Chihuahua mix is a sturdy girl who is playful,
affectionate, and very intelligent. She was found as a stray but
is in excellent shape, with a deep, silky, chocolate brown coat and
white markings.
She
is quite the food hound and craves attention as well. Angie gets
along well with other dogs and with cats. But, she really enjoys the
company of people, is great conversationalist and learns commands
quickly. Already housetrained, she will be a welcome addition to any
family.

04/24/2010
Champ
Estimated Birthday May 1996
He
walks with his head up, tail up, and ears up. Every step of his trim
figure is almost a pose. He looks exactly what his name describes - a
champ.
One
of two dogs released to us by an owner with a terminal illness who
wanted to be sure they were taken care of sooner than later, Champ has
settled nicely into his multi-dog foster home. He gets along well with
the other dogs and doesn’t chase the cats. Sort of a Jack LaLanne of
dogdom, he’ll jump onto the recliner and climb up the back to get his
foster dad to pick him up if he’s standing nearby. His favorite
locations are a lap or curled up among the bed pillows.
Time
has dimmed his eyesight a bit and the vet took most of his teeth at his
last dental, but if you didn’t know his age, you would surely guess
wrong. He’s not on any meds and has no other health issues.
He
likes the fare that’s cooked up for the whole crew but also thrives on
regular ”dog” food. For some reason he feels it’s his duty to do
most of the barking during the excitement at feeding time.
Well,
he does get a bit grumpy if you want to move him from a spot he’s
settled into, but all is soon forgiven. Champ weighs something over
seven pounds. At night he sleeps under the covers curled up next to his
foster dad’s side.
What
a guy!

Elvira's Puppies
Birthday
May 11, 2009
Named
after the Oak Ridge Boys - William Lee, Duane, Richard and Joe,
two of them were a bit braver than their brothers when we did
their photos, but it will be hard to tell them apart now that they have
been living in a real home and getting love and attention. Well, except
little Willy - the chocolate tri colored pup.
No
one knows who their daddy was so we don’t have a clue what all is in
the mix or what size they will bee when they grow up. The boys will
start going to adoption clinics after their puppy shots so you will be
able to watch them as they grow. If you would like to be put on the
waiting list send in an application, which is available on our website,
and we can start the process to place them in foster-to-adopt homes when
they are old enough - about mid August.

Vanessa's Puppies
Birthday
June 22. 2009
Vanessa
is an eleven pound pale fawn colored Chihuahua mix. At eight weeks these
little cuties weigh eight and a half pounds and still have some growing
to do! It is anyone’s guess who daddy might be, but there may be some
Cocker Spaniel; evidence the curly hair on some of their ears. Probably
a terrier type is mixed in, as well. In any case, they will be small
dogs when full grown.
Typical
puppies, these little ones are full of vim and vigor and lots of puppy
breath. There are two girls and two boys: Vienna, Vixen, Vladimir
and Vulcan

Raven
and Puppies
Estimated Birthday February 18, 2008
Raven
was just a puppy herself when she gave birth to five little ones and
then ended up in the shelter in Artesia where they ran out of time to be
adopted. She is a sweet little gal that will blossom into a great little
friend for a family with school aged children.
The
puppies were born about May 14, 2009, give or take a day or two. We
think the daddy may have been a Dachshund cross. They are all black with
some white toes. They have longer drop ears and just a touch of wirey
coat. It will be fun to see how they and their coats grow!
We
have named them: Rascal (little boy), Roberta, Rhonda, Rachael and
Roxanne.

El Niño
Birthday June 20, 2009
El
Nino’s mom, Mija, was just a pup herself when she had El Nino and his
sister, La Nina. It is any ones guess who daddy is, but we think perhaps
Australian Shepherd mix or even Cocker Spaniel, though everyone says
they look like a miniature Golden Retrievers!
El
Nino does have some Retriever tendencies: he is super friendly, loves
people and loves to carry things. In fact, he patrols the house several
times a day to pickup and carry all of the dog toys that have been
strewn around and puts them back in the box. El Nino is a big dog in a
small dog package.

Salt and Pepper
Birthday
January 20, 2008
Salt
and Pepper are litter mates, born on January 20, 2008. They were
surrendered by their owner because she decided she did not have the time
to give them that they deserve after her change is circumstances...
They
are sweet boys; weighing about twelve pounds each. They keep each other
company so would be a great pair to go to a home with someone who does
not already have dogs. Their foster family says they are active and get
the other foster dogs to play, as well. At the end of the day they like
to share the couch and soak up all the love they can get.

Vaquero
Estimated Birthday June 29, 2007
Vaquero
was picked up as a stray on the Isleta Pueblo and brought into the
Valencia County shelter. The Valencia County shelter contracts with the
municipalities of Bosque Farms, Peralta, Los Lunas, Belen and Isleta to
impound their stray dogs and cats because those areas to not have a
shelter facility.
Over
6,000 animals have been sheltered at the Valencia County shelter over
the past year. 60% of them are euthanized because of the lack of space
or the animals are sick. Vaquero was almost one of them.
He
was held for the three business day holding period but broke with kennel
cough; similar to a cold in children in daycare. However, since it is
highly contagious to other dogs it has been deemed a reason to euthanize
otherwise healthy dogs. If allowed to stay at the shelter he could cause
other dogs to become ill and none of the would be adopted. Rescue is the
only option.
It
took three weeks for him to recover from the virus. Since then he has
been with our other foster dogs and is an all-around little Mexican
cowboy. If you are looking for an active, tough little fellow, Vaquero
would love to become a part of your posse.

04/24/2010
Josh
and Jason
Birthday November 2, 2009
Jason
and Josh were delivered by caesarean section because their mother,
Missy, was hit by a car and had a broken pelvis. She also had a ruptured
diaphragm so could not deliver them by herself. Fortunately she was full
term when she was injured so the puppies were fully developed.
The
owners said that the dad is a small Chihuahua and they had a couple of
litters from them before. It appears that they were not completely
truthful or Missy met another Romeo . . .
At
eight weeks they weighed five and five and a half pounds each. We
anticipate they will be around twelve pounds as adults. There is a hint
of Pug in their faces and they have stocky bodies, but what the whole
mix is will never be known. The boys are VERY social and love to play
with the other rescue dogs and adore people. They should grow up to be
great family dogs, able to keep up on long walks, rough and tumble with
school age children and still fit comfortably on the couch and snuggle
with their family .

Journey
Estimated Age: Fifteen plus
The
call came from a local shelter that they had a tiny male Chihuahua,
about ten years old, with a badly infected cut over his eye and asking
if we would take him. A volunteer picked up a curled up bundle of misery
and rushed him to our vet. He wasn’t tiny by our standards. The
“infected cut” turned out to be a ruptured eye. They hadn’t
mentioned every tooth in his head was about as rotten as it could be.
The vet estimated his age as fifteen instead of ten. When we got him
uncurled in the exam room we found out, as one of our rescuers had
suspicions, that he’s a...uh...well...can you say miniature pinscher?
Blood work results were all over the place, mostly too high or too low
for whatever was being measured. He was a real mess. What the heck. He
was our guy now and after a conference with the vet, we decided he could
be saved. Out came the ruptured eye. Out came the rotten teeth. In went
a lot of antibiotics and an IV drip. After a couple of days recuperation
at the clinic, the vet declared “he’s tough as nails”.
Now
Journey’s well on the road to recovery. He’ll always be on a kidney
friendly diet and need salve for his chronic dry eye, but between naps
and eating, this quick stepping little old man is relearning how to
really enjoy a dog’s life. He has to compete with several other dogs
in his foster home for attention and really needs to be an ”only”
with mature adults who can provide all the love he can soak up. After
who knows how many years of neglect, he’s earned it.

Brett
Birthday approx September 7, 2006.
His
elderly owner brought Brett to the Valencia County Animal Shelter
because he had to go to the hospital and had no one to care for his dog.
Having already survived Parvo as a puppy, this was the second
devastating challenge in his life. After three days and no one
interested in adopting him, Brett was close to losing his life again.
This
marvelous little dog is full of energy and a lust for life. His eyes
hold the worry of life at its worst, but his tail and enthusiasm show
his will to survive. If you are looking
for an athletic companion who can lift your spirits and test your metal
please consider our “give it your all” Brett.

Mary
Poppins
Birthday approximately January 20, 2008
Found
running as a stray in Valencia County, little Mary Poppins time was up
at the shelter. She had a lump on her neck and was holding up her left
hind leg so perhaps anyone who would have adopted her otherwise didn’t
want to risk medical expenses to make her sound and healthy.
We
had the lump removed and had her torn cruciate ligament repaired. Her
medical expenses came to just under $1,000. It was well worth it! Mary
Poppins is a delightful and very active little girl. Most likely a
Chihuahua x Pomeranian she weighs just under six pounds and loves
everyone.
We
think she needs to go to a home with active adults without young
children or larger hyperactive pets. It is unusual for dogs her size to
sustain such an injury so it may have been from some kind of accident.
However, we would rather not put her in a home that she would be at risk
for re-injuring her knee.

Burton
ADOPTED!
02-13-2010
and Bubbles ADOPTED!
03/27/2010
Estimated Birthday: June 24, 2004 Litter mates
Adopted
from a shelter in California several years ago, Bubbles and Burton moved
to New Mexico with their family. Unfortunately they were not part of the
long term family plan. Their owner got pregnant and decided that they
would be a health issue for her new born child. We agree that Chihuahuas
are not a wise choice for families with very young children, so we
accepted these two little sweethearts to help them find a real forever
home.
They
are little love bugs with their foster mom; always looking for a hug and
kisses. Burton is a real gentleman, but Bubbles can be a little pushy to
be the only one in her lap. We would prefer to keep these two together
as they enjoy each others company so much. Mutual grooming and keeping
themselves entertained with toys and romps in the yard make them easy to
care for.
They
weigh about five pounds each. The previous owner cannot find the
adoption papers so we are estimating their age to be about five years
old. They are house trained during the day, but will use piddle pads if
they are left for an extended period of time. What a perfect pair for an
adult home!

Honeysuckle
Estimated Birthday August 2, 2009
“What
a sweetheart, isn’t she a honey, baby girl”! And that is how she got
the name Honeysuckle. She is one of a dozen Chihuahuas that came to us
from a hoarders home (with over 200 dogs) in northern New Mexico.
Fortunately, the small dogs were kept inside and were all social.
The
owner became ill and the family decided it was time to step in and move
the animals out. A sad end for the owner who loved her pets, but could
not care for them properly.
This
little gal has a chance at a new life in a home that can spoil her as
much as she deserves.

The

lived outside. Fortunately the little ones are social and were much

Dexter
Birthday
approx March 3, 2005.
While
working in her mothers yard in Peralta, a woman and her friend found a
Chihuahua hiding in the brush by the ditch bank. They took him
door-to-door but no one recognized him. They called the shelter to
report him found, but they had not received a report of a dog of his
description. They took him home to their apartment in Albuquerque and
waited to see if his owners would call. After a few days they decided to
ask if we could take him in because they couldn’t keep a dog there and
were going on vacation soon.
We
posted him with the shelters, in the paper and the local Village office
- to no avail. So, little Dexter is looking for a new home. About three
years old and just six pounds, this meek little boy is just dying to
find a sensitive someone who will let him snuggle and kiss away their
tears and celebrate their cheers.

Tim
Birthday Estimated December 24, 2007
This
little boy was found lying on the side of the road early on Christmas
Eve morning. The woman who found him knew about our rescue and called us
immediately to see if we could help him.
Fortunately,
his injuries were not life threatening - a broken pelvis and bruising. He
was given cage rest for two months and mended without surgery. Now Timmy
is running and playing like a young pup.
Tiny
Tim weighs a little over six pounds and is about a year and a half old.
He is a sweet boy with a loving personality. He is great with the other
foster dogs and loves his foster mom and dad. We are so glad he was

Tonto
Estimated Birthday April 30, 1999
Tonto
is lucky to be alive. Someone found him on a ditch bank in Valencia
County. He was lethargic and had asphalt and dirt caked on one side.
Covered in ticks and just skin and bones the staff put him in a kennel
with food and water in the euthanasia room expecting to have to put him
down.
After
pulling off dozens of ticks and giving him a bath he perked up and they
decided to give him a chance to recover. They held him for the owner
reclaim period but the owners didn’t come looking for him. He was
moved into the adoption kennels and waited there for almost a week. No
one took him home. When we did our weekly walk through we decided that
he needed to come into our rescue.
Only
six pounds and about ten years old his life of neglect had taken it’s
toll on his teeth. After a dental he only has a few left. He was very
shy at first but is building confidence. Instead of hiding around the
corner he comes running in for dinner with the rest of the pack. Though
he still crouches down to be picked up, but isn’t cowering under the
table. Tonto is becoming a brave little boy!

02-13-2010
Alvin
Estimated Birthday August 2, 2007
Just
skin and bones when he came to us as a stray from a shelter in southern
New Mexico, precious Alvin has gained weight and is ready for a new
home. He is about two and a half years old and should weigh about seven
pounds when he fills out.
There
is a lot of confusion over terms used to describe Chihuahuas; cobby,
apple head, deer type, toy, teacup and more. There is only one breed
standard with two coats - smooth or long. However, unregulated breeding
has produced a wide range of small dogs - both registered and
unregistered.
Alvin
could be described as a deer style with an apple head; meaning he has
long legs, thin body and a domed head with large ears and eyes. His best
attribute is his loving personality. Alvin is a real cuddle bug that
loves to snuggle with people and would prefer to sleep under the covers
with his person.

Cody
II
Birthday
approx January 14, 2002.
Just
out of space and out of time, Cody was out of luck at the Clovis
shelter. He caught a ride to Albuquerque where he was transferred to our
rescue. It seemed like he might have an injury of sort, but nothing
showed up in his blood profile or exam. We decided to just wait and see.
It
took a couple of weeks, but he started to perk up and act like a hppy
dog. Perhaps there was some horrible accident that left him on the
streets. Perhaps he lost a family that he loved. We don’t know what
caused him to be so depressed.
Cody
is a very sturdy fellow with a serious take on life. We think he will
make a great companion for a home that wants a quiet friend. Cody enjoys
the company of other dogs, a soft bed and gentle hugs.
UPDATE:
Cody loves to be held and cradled like a baby in his foster mom’s
arms. He loves tummy rubs and giving kisses in her ear. Though he is a
bit stand offish with strangers, his foster mom - a dog trainer - is
working with him to be gracious with visitors. Cody is going to make a
great companion for someone looking for an old soul to stroll through
life with for the next decade or so.

Dara
Birthday approx May 5, 2005.
This
beautiful little girl was mauled by a neighbors dog as she followed her
young owners down the street in their neighborhood. She had two sets of
puncture wounds from all four canines of the big dog that attacked her.
Punctures and tears from shoulder to shoulder and flank to flank. She
was seconds away from death when the dog let her go.
The
family contacted the emergency vet and found that they could not afford
to have her injuries treated. The were referred to us and asked if we
would take her into our rescue and save her life. Our darling Dara was
the second dog that week that we took in because of injuries by big
dogs. She was luckier than Hawthorn who will probably have long term
lameness from his attack.
Dara
is doing very well, but will have scares from her encounter. However, it
has not changed her lovely personality and love for people. She does not
seem to have an issue with any of the small dogs in her foster home, but
we will have to see how she feels about big dogs. . . Dara weighs about
seven pounds.

Tess
Estimated Birthday October 31, 2005
Found
as a stray in Valencia County and taken to the shelter, this long haired
black beauty is an active, happy and playful girl that loves to cuddle
and snuggle. Tess enjoys wrestling with her foster siblings, which
includes other Chihuahua mixed dogs, huskies and cats. She is very agile
and authentic, with a 2 to 3 foot vertical jump, so could be a great
agility prospect.
At
about 10 pounds she is a great size for an indoor dog, but big enough
and young enough to go for long walks or play fetch with the family.
Tess is obedient, with good house manners, although can be very vocal
when exited.
Most
likely a Pomeranian we think there may be a hint of Chihuahua in her
background, too. Her long coat will require consistent grooming to keep
her looking so lovely.

Vinnie
Birthday approx January 17, 2006.
We
were concerned that Vinnie was going to be a tough guy because he has
huge scars from an attack by a neighbor dog. They say a Pit Bull mangled
him through the fence. The owner didn’t have him treated for his
injuries, but they have healed well - we just will have to wait and see
if the hair grows back.
In
the meantime, the owner released Vinnie and Tia, along with a ShihTzu to
the shelter. We think Vinnie or the ShihTzu are the father of her
puppies (to be born the end of May). Our guess is that Vinnie was being
macho and protecting his girl friend. But, he is terrific with people
and immediately got along with all of the foster dogs - mostly males.
Vinnie
weighs just over eight pounds, has been vaccinated, neutered, micro chipped
and a dental. He is a grand little dog with a tremendous presence. No
purse or cutesy bling for him!

Trucker
II
Birthday
approx November 11, 2007.
Picked
up as a stray in Los Lunas, this sweet boy was adopted after the three
day holding period. His new family took him home to several young
children. The older kids did well with him, but the youngest thought he
made a great speed bump for this Tonka toys. When he objected the new
family brought him back to the shelter. That made him an owner release
and he was scheduled to be euthanized the next day. Thank goodness we
were there to take him into rescue. He deserves a chance for a good
home.
We
named him Trucker and think he is a wonderful dog. The other dogs bully
him a bit because he is so submissive. That reinforces our policy of not
adopting our dogs to homes with children under school age. Kids can be
too rough with sensitive dogs and the dog takes the rap. Good boy
Trucker!

McDreamy
Estimated Birthday April 10, 2008
Who
could resist the bedroom eyes of our little McDreamy?! Black with
“frosting” and tiny tuxedo markigs, this handsome little man is
about one year old and weighs just under six pounds. He and his buddy,
James Dean were picked up as strays in Artesia. The two of them are
happy to have a second chance at a good life in northern New Mexico with
a foster family that allows them to be a bit rowdy at play time.
McDreamy
is friendly with everyone on a social basis, but is looking for a
lasting relationship with that special someone who can appreciate his
desire for a long term commitment. He is ready to give up the single
life and settle down with a family, preferably without young children.
This little fellow is a real gem.

Just
over a year old, James Dean is a free spirit like his name sake. He
takes a few minutes to size up strangers but is happy to share his take
on the world when he gets to know them. But his passion is to ride on
the wild side - ready to rumble with his good buddy McDreamy, preferably
on the couch with his couch potato foster family.
JD
was picked up as a stray in Artesia and hitched a ride to Albuquerque
with a rescue transport, where he has decided he wants to stay. A light

older children and another active and friendly smaller dog.

Conrad
Estimated
Birthday February 2, 2008
This
sweet little guy was adopted at the City of Albuquerque Animal Care
Center, but when they pre-processed him for his neuter he tested
positive for heartworm and the adopted opted not to take him. The
shelter asked if we could take him into rescue, treat his heartworm and
find him a good home.
Because
he is young and doesn’t show symptoms of the disease Conrad should
recover quickly when the worms have died off through treatment. He will
be available for adoption after we have him neutered in August.

Theresa
Estimated Birthday January 19, 2009
The
shelter called us to say a woman brought in a very sick little
Chihuahua; she had diarrhea, not eating, and lethargic. Fortunately our
veterinarian was able to take her in immediately, start fluids and begin
testing. We assumed she had parvo, but she tested negative.
We
had recently had several dogs from the southern part of the state test
positive for erhlichia - a bacterial infection carried by ticks. We
started her on antibiotics in an effort to head off whatever was killing
her. Then we ran a IDEXX 3DX test which showed positive for erhlichia.
Thank goodness we were able to get her in right away and begin treating
her. I have never seen gums so white on a live dog. After three days of
IV fluids, medication and a nice warm incubator little Tessie was able
to come home.
A
precious and delicate little princess weighing 3 ½ pounds at five
months, Theresa will do best in a home with a doting mom who will keep
her bundled in blankies, sweaters, and draped in jewels.

Texas Two Step
Estimated
Birthday July 7, 2007
Texas
Two Step is a sweet two year old southwestern kinda guy with a bit of a
cowboy’s swagger. He was picked up as a stray in Roswell and made his
way to our rescue to find a new home on the range. He is a very smart
fellow that enjoys socializing and going for a ride.
He
has been well mannered in his foster home - no marking or spitting. If
you are looking for a small companion (ten pound size) that is patient
and able to think for himself (not a silly little trinket) Tex could be
your boy.
This
handsome fellow will be a great companion for a family with other small
dogs that like to play a bit rough, but are not dominant since he
considers himself the herd boss.

She loves to run with the other foster dogs and play with toys.
Chelsea
is a lovely little girl, weighing just under eight pounds. She is
probably a Chihuahua x Pomeranian mix. She is looking for a home with a
yard and hopefully another dog to play with when the family is not
there. Someone who likes to take walks would be great!

Mija
Estimated
Birthday August 8, 2008
We
picked up precious little Mija from a shelter in Carlsbad; two days
later she delivered two puppies. Mija was only about a year old when she
had her babies, so is really just a puppy herself. She didn’t know how
to care for them properly, or perhaps knew that they were not healthy
puppies. Both El Nino and La Nina are deaf. La Nina was born with a
deformed right eye and her tail was amputated because it was deformed,
as well.
With
her puppies weaned and playing happily together, Mija has been enjoying
a care free life with her foster brothers and sisters. Full of energy
and has a life is good attitude. It doesn’t seem that she was abused
in her previous home - just neglected.
Mija
weighs about eight pounds and has the happiest smile all the time. She
has huge upright ears that flag over at the tips. She is a delightful
little dog without a care in the world.

Margarita
Estimated Birthday April 10, 2008
At
first glance you might mistake this pretty little girl for a fox because
of her bright red coat, long legs, and refined muzzle. But our tiny
Margarita is most likely a Chihuahua and Pomeranian mix. This beautiful
little girl came in as a stray with four newborn puppies from a shelter
in southern New Mexico.
She
has a heart murmur and is being treated for Ehrlichiosis, a bacterial
infection transmitted by ticks. Margarita will be ready for adoption in
mid June, when her puppies have been weaned and we retest to see that
she is clear of Ehrlichia.
UPDATE:
The heart arrhythmia was apparently due to the bacterial infection
Ehrlichia. Since her treatment her heart is back to a normal rhythm. This
little 15 pound darling is ready to go into a new home. Margarita is
full of energy and would love to find a family with preteen kids and
another dog or two to play with.

Jewel
Estimated Birthday may 3, 2007
We
could not have picked a better name for the lovely little long haired
Chihuahua we call Jewel. This amazing little dog delivered SEVEN puppies
the night before we took her in from a shelter in Southern New Mexico
- and all are doing well.
Another
momma, Dolly Parton, came with her and delivered four puppies two weeks
later. One of her puppies was still born. The other three nursed for a
week but momma was looking so poor we took her back to the vet and ran
blood tests. We learned that she has erhliciosis, a bacterial infection
of the blood carried by ticks. The vet said she would not survive
without treatment, but the medication would be harmful to the puppies.
We asked Jewel what she thought and she said yes, she could nurse them,
too.
We
are bottle feeding in between and the bigger puppies are starting to eat
baby food and are round and happy pups.
This
gorgeous little girl weighs about seven pounds and has a sweet but very
sensitive temperament. Sh needs a home that is as quiet and nurturing as
she is.

Jewel's Puppies
Birthday

They
don’t come much cuter than this! All seven of Jewel’s babies are
just adorable and super sweet. Each is cuter than the next and then you

then . . .
We
named Jewel’s puppies; Onyx (the only boy), Diamond, Sapphire, Topaz,
Garnet, Opal, and Amethyst (Amy).
When
they are three months old they will be available for foster-to-adopt
homes. Adoptions will be finalized after they are spay or neutered and
microchipped at five to six months old.
We
are accepting application now.

Mae
Estimated Birthday
February 3, 1996
One
of five dogs left behind when her 82 year owner was placed in a nursing
home, Mae has been a bit confused about why her life has taken this odd
turn. Our volunteer, Jim and his mom, are giving her a stable life in
their foster home with several other elderly Chihuahuas. Mae has a heart
condition, and in her advanced age, we doubt there will be anyone who
will want to take her in for the last years of her life.
However,
if you are one of those special people who want to give some one-on-one
loving to a lovely old lady, please submit an application. She enjoys
spending time outside when it is warm and burrows under the pillowcase
and sleeps on the pillow with a light covering when it is chilly.
Mae
has been vaccinated and microchipped. We believe she was spayed earlier
in her life. All she needs now is someone to cuddle with and tell her
how beautiful she is in her old age. Can you just imagine how cute she
was as a pup!? She is lovely in her old age.

Betty
Grable
Birthday approximate
January 13, 2009
Lovely
little “BG” is a solid white Miniature Australian Shepherd mix with
one marble blue eye and one brown eye. She’s a fluffy ball of puppy
energy at just over four pounds at about four months of age. She loves
to play ”puppy stuff” with toys, other dogs and people.
Unfortunately
she was born deaf, likely from a breeding of a merle to merle colored
parents. Her owner didn’t want to deal with Betty Grable’s hearing
problem so surrendered her to a humane organization in Artesia. She is
lucky in that many breeders “cull” puppies with health issues that
make them hard to sell.
The
hearing impairment may present some initial difficulties with potty
training, but this little dear has many years of happiness and joy to
give to the right home. We have had an offer by a trainer experienced
with deaf dogs to get her started on the right track. After basic
training and spaying, vaccinations and microchip we will place her in a
home that will continue to bring out the best in this bright little
girl.

Paul
Newman
Estimated Birthday May 5, 2007
We
named him Paul Newman because of his “to die for eyes”. And he plays
the part of Cool Hand Luke very well. In fact, we think he could be cast
as the star in a Chihuahua movie. Unbelievable that he was picked up as
a stray in Carlsbad and no one claimed him!
Paul
Newman would prefer a home with only one or two other pets and middle
school aged, or older, children. He is mellow and gets along well with
other dogs his size. His current foster home has cats and an array of
other pets, so we will know more about his preferences when he gets
settled in there. This amazingly handsome boy weighs five pounds.

Sue
Estimated Birthday March 5, 2009
She
is “sweet as pie” as daddy used to say. This darling little girl is
beyond cute. But then I am partial to scruffy faced little dogs. The
best part is that she is as loving as she looks.
As
wonderful as she is it is baffling how she could have been picked up as
a stray in southern New Mexico. No matter what her past was we are going
to make sure her future is sunny and bright. If you think you can offer
that promise to our little Peggy Sue, please submit an application.
Since she is so small we will be looking for a home with school aged
children and well mannered companion pets.

Black
Velvet
Estimated Birthday January 5, 2008
If
you don’t like wiggly, squiggly, kissy dogs, Black Velvet probably
isn’t the right match for you. However, she is still a puppy so she
will probably settle down a bit when she gets older. The fact remains,
she loves to be loved.
Velvet
was found as a stray in Valencia County. In fact she was found under the
bed one morning in a home where owners had left the door cracked open on
a warm evening. They put her out to find her way back home, but she ran
to a neighbor when she drove up from running errands. After contacting
other neighbors, reporting to the shelter, and placing ads it was
determined she was not going to be reclaimed. After two weeks the finder
released her to our rescue to be placed in a loving home.

Lollipop
Birthday approx June 25, 2007
The
owner of this little dog handed her over in the parking lot. He was on
the way to turn her in at the shelter, but one of our volunteers was
there and said we would take her in. She was tiny and sweet and very
sick. Her tests were negative for Parvo, Giardia and worms, but she was
dehydrated and needed veterinary attention. After a few days of fluids
and lots of loving care, Lollipop bounced back and hasn’t looked back!
This
little baby doll will make someone so happy to have her in their home.
However, if it is you be prepared to be wrapped around a little paw. She
is a bit of a Diva.
UPDATE:
Lollipop was adopted but returned to our rescue because her adopters boy
friend and the little Diva did not get along.

have had pushy little dogs in the past and can help her learn how to
behave you will find a gem in the rough.
About
five pounds of black and tan personality, she needs to find a home that

Applebee
Birthday
approx July 2004.
The
family moved out and left this little guy to fend for himself in the
back yard. Neighbors were sympathetic and brought him food and water.
After several weeks we were able to bring him into rescue. He is still
very worried about what life might bring and is working hard at settling
in with his foster family. AppleBee is a handsome dark fawn, seven pound
boy. He loves to run and play with the other foster
Chihuahuas
his size. His foster mom is working with him to walk on a leash and use
the doggie door - both with much success. He needs a bit more contact
with other people to become more confident and comfortable with
strangers.

Sassy
Birthday
approximately January 5, 2003
The
photos of the house this sweet girl came from is enough to turn your
stomach. All of the pets were confiscated and the owners found guilty of
neglect. Every surface of the entire house was infested with cockroaches
and covered in trash. It is hard to imagine the life the people and
those poor animals lived.
But
now that she is in a clean home and eating good food, Sassy is getting
spunky! She walks with a wiggle and a big smile now.
We
are not sure of her age, but our vet did a dental in December and thinks
she is about six or seven years old. Sassy is most likely a Chihuahua
and Dachshund cross. She apparently has had at least one litter of
puppies - probably more. It is time for this sweetie to find a forever
home so she can live the good life.

Hans
Solo
Birthday
approx June 28, 2005.
This
incredibly handsome boy came from the Artesia shelter. The staff found
him tied to the shelter gate with a rope. No note to say why; was he a
stray or discarded by his owner? He was very thin and dirty.
We
think he may have been kept in a small space for a long period of his
life, as he circles a lot. He is unassuming and very easy to get along
with, but not clingy. Perhaps he was used for breeding and has not
learned how to develop a loving relationship with people yet.
It
will take a while for him to build a bond, but we believe it is possible
for him to become a loving and trusted companion for someone who is
willing to make the effort. Hans Solo is about three years old and
currently weighs five and a half pounds, though he needs to gain
about half a pound more to fill out well.

Spike
Estimated Birthday August 20 ,
2006
Spike
was released to our rescue by the City of Albuquerque shelter because
his owner said he was being dominant. The shelter does not place dogs
into families if they are concerned about their temperament.
Fortunately
we have some foster homes that understand how to help insecure dogs
build confidence and learn to live happily in a loving home. In his
foster home he has been rewarded for good behavior and discouraged for
unacceptable behaviors.
His
foster mom says; “He has a new girlfriend (Isabella) and it’s
softened him even more! He has turned into the best little man who loves
to please, chase and be chased around and around the house. I can’t
wait for him to find a forever home and he deserves the best. I think a
home with teenagers or older children who know doggy boundaries and are
full of energy will have the best little brother companion in Spike. At
the same time, a tough biker dude would match also (he looks absolutely
fantastic in leather and spikes) and loves to be on the road (he can
almost put his halter on himself)! I should mention, that he does talk
(we are working on his potty mouth) and we have actually contemplated
sending a video of him sassing back to me to AFV because it is
absolutely hilarious! He is truly a wonderful little man with a heart
bigger than seems possible in his stocky 7 lb. Body.”
If
you enjoy a dog that can think for himself yet listen to your opinion
and obey, Spike could be the perfect little buddy for you.

Estimated Birthday March 5, 2009.
Levi
is a precious stout hearted little guy! He is super friendly with the

special. He is about four pounds at three months so will probably be
around ten pounds when he is fully grown. Happy and brave, Levi should
be a good dog for a family with school aged children and an active life
style.
Wouldn’t
he be cute in a denim collar! Levi will be available to go to a
foster-to-adopt home when he is three months old and current on all of
his puppy shots. We will finalize the adoption after he is neutered and
microchipped.

Laverne
and Shirley
Estimated Birthday August 3, 2008
Harkening
back to their namesake TV series, if we hadn’t picked up this pair of
pretty girls on a Sunday, they would have been ”cancelled” on Monday
and never seen the light of day on Tuesday. Picked up as strays in
Carlsbad, our rescue was this pair’s last hope for a new home.
Laverne
(ears up) and Shirley (ears down) are probably Jack Russell
Terrier/Chihuahua mix and at under a year old are high energy very
active like teenage girls. Laverne currently weighs five and a half
pounds and Shirley weighs four and a half. They get along great with
other dogs and people and are very affectionate. How cute do two little
dogs need to be? Though they are great buddies, they do not have to be
adopted together.

Birthday
approx April 15, 2008.
The
owner released these two little boys, along with their litter mate
Remington, because she is moving to Nevada and couldn’t take them

Their
mother is a small Chihuahua x Pug and their dad is an even smaller
brindle Chihuahua. Smith is a dark fawn with heavy black sabling and
resemble his mother. Wesson is a reverse brindle and looks more like his
Chihuahua dad. They weighed just over a pound at eight weeks of age and
should end up at about seven or eight pounds full grown. They are happy
little boys and should do well in homes with school aged children.

No
need to go into detail about her personality, you can see how wonderful
she is by the sweet look on her face. She weighs about seven pounds and
is three years old. Bonita is pretty much perfect.

Sir
Lancelot
Birthday
Estimated January 9, 1999
He
was bought as a purebred Chihuahua, but his body says otherwise. He is a
tad chunky and the ears look more like a Pug. The woman who bought
him ten years ago passed away and her granddaughter asked us to take him
into our rescue rather than taking him to the pound.
He
had been neutered but we have no record of other care so we had him
micro chipped, vaccinated and had a dental done right away. Sir Lancelot
weighs just under 12 pounds and could use a bit of a diet. They said he
will sit-up like a Meerkat and wait for ever for treats. It will be
pretty hard to avid his sad, beggars eyes. He has lived with other large
and small dogs, cats and children, though it would be best to place him
in a home without young children.

Marie
Antoinette Puppies
Estimated Birthday January 17, 2009
Their
mother is Marie Antoinette, an owner release from Las Vegas, New Mexico.
She and her four puppies were going to a shelter if not taken in by
rescue and the puppies were a bit too young to be exposed to the hectic
and scary shelter life and exposure to disease.
Mom
is a Chihuahua cross, probably mixed with a terrier breed. The puppies
are fluffy and cute as can be. It will be a while before we can give a
good guess of their mix and how big they will grow up to be. They are
very healthy and happy puppies and in a great foster home that is
teaching them how to behave socially with people and other dogs.
They
will probably require more grooming than a smooth coated breed, so
please keep that in mind if you are interested in adopting one of these
sweeties: Andre, Basil, Chloe, and Monique.

Esperanza
Estimated Birthday April 7, 2008.
Probably
a Chihuahua, Dachshund and Terrier mix, Esperanza is a delightfully
happy little seven pound little girl. Because of her exuberance we feel
a family with a youngest child should be at least seven or eight years
old.
Esperanza
came from a shelter in southern New Mexico without any details about her
past. We assume she was picked up as a stray and was not adopted before
her time was up. Lucky for someone that she made it to our rescue where
she will be cared for until the right home comes along. She has all the
ingredients to make a great companion - all you need to add is love.

James
Bond
Estimated Birthday May 11, 2008
Sometimes
things just happen in rescue. James Bond is one of those unexpected
events. On mother’s Day our volunteer Margaret was meeting a transport
to pick up a pregnant mama dog and help transport several others to two
other rescue groups. Unfortunately the rescue who was to take this
little guy didn’t show up and did not follow-up to take him; so we
did. It is quite a stretch to include him in our program because most
people who come to look at our web site and meet us at adoption clinics
are looking for Chihuahuas. Or, at least looks mostly like Chihuahuas.
On-the-other hand, we placed a Chocolate Lab last week. But that is
another story.
James
Bond is probably a mix of some kind of terrier, a touch of Dachshund and
a hint of Chihuahua. He is a very sweet little guy weighing about eleven
pounds. Already close to a year old he should not get much bigger.

Mandy
II
Estimated Birthday April 10, 2006
Running
back and forth through traffic in Los Lunas, this little gal was
terrified as cars honked, the police car broadcast telling people to
ignore the dog, as she dashed, stopped, and dashed again not knowing
where to run to next. Fortunately, one of our volunteers was in the line
of cars almost at a stop. She opened her door and offered a whiff of
hamburgers she had just picked up for the grand kids in the back seat.
Mandy jumped in and settled down for the ride to her new foster home.
Sadly,
we don’t know where her puppies are or were. She was still heavy with
milk from nursing babies. Perhaps they were weaned and given away by
then. Ruth reported finding Mandy to the local animal control office,
the Los Lunas Village office, posted her in the news paper and even with
Albuquerque shelter and Animal Humane.
Someone
is going to be lucky to adopt this lovely little three year old,
Chihuahua mix. We are guessing she may be part Pug or Shih Tzu because
of her delightful, slight under bite and roundish face, thick white coat
with golden patches and heavy bone. She is about 12 pounds and as sweet
as she could be now that she is safe and warm.

Symphony
Estimated Birthday March 13, 2008
Not
the kind of girl to kiss on the first date, Symphony would prefer a
slower introduction to strangers. She is a little timid and submissive
at first, but is just dying for a true love to hold and hug her.
Released by her owner because the Section 8 housing unit would rather
not have dogs there at all, made it difficult for the owner to keep her.
She is the second dog we have taken into our program from that housing
facility.
Symphony
is a long legged and elegant little dog. Weighing just over nine pounds,
we think she is a longhair Chihuahua mix. Her sister is with another
family in the facility and we are waiting to see if they will need to
place her - a smaller, smooth coat Chihuahua - too.

Margarita's
Puppies
Birthday April 10, 2009
All
four of Margarita’s puppies are girls: Tequila , Sangrita, Agave, and
Juanita Cuervo, the only one left. Mom is a long hair Chihuahua cross, but we don’t know
who the daddy is. It is likely that they will be near the size of
Margarita when they grow up, but there is no way to know until they are
much older. In the meantime they are full of energy and lots of puppy
breath.

Amica
Estimated Birthday January 17, 2009
A
darling little Chihuahua x Terrier, Amica will become some ones best
girlfriend. She is very active and loves to run and play with our other
small terrier mix puppies. She currently weighs five and a half pounds
but most likely will mature at about eight pounds. She was picked up as
a stray in Artesia, no history known, but we do know she had some kind
of injury to her left front foot at an early age. It has healed with a
lump and slight offset of her foot. It doesn’t seem to bother her, as
she can run non-stop with the other kids.
We
think she is perfect just the way she is - scruffy face and all.

Treasure
Estimated Birthday June 2, 2000
In
the dark of night this dainty little black girl was scratching at
Laura’s door. There is no way to know if she was abandoned or simply
lost her way from home. She is a tiny little five pound sweetheart that
must have been loved by someone. Unsuccessful in finding her owner;
Laura asked us to take her into our rescue organization as she already
has her hands full with a couple of dogs and her ill husband to tend.
Treasure
is very affectionate, and wants to be with a person all the time. She
will be a terrific lapdog for an older family that wants to have a tiny
dog to cuddle.

FEE $150
